Andy (offbeat radio)
Next for you. On offbeat Reggae radio. I have someone who I’ve been talking to for a few months now, describing themselves as a fusion of soul, reggae and hip hop. The musical collective is made up of the Grammy Award-winning, “Commissioner” Gordon Williams and the multi instrumentalist Dajla aka “the White Tigress”.
The act I want to introduce you to today is White Tiger Society. And I have French Tunisian singer songwriter on the line right now from New York. Hello.
Dajla – Hello, Andy. How are you?
Andy – I am amazing. Thank you very much. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak to me today.
Dajla – You’re very welcome. Thank you for having me.
Andy -I wonder if we can start off by talking about the collective and how it came into being. Where did White Tiger society come from?
Dajla – First of all, I have to say that I had been playing music in various bands since the mid ninety s. I was born in France, started playing keys and bass. Initially I was not really a singer, but I went my way through various bands.
I moved to London and played with various bands in London. Little by little I started realizing that I had to write my own songs and started writing early. Two thousand s I released two albums under my name Dajla. It’s just a little bit later that I started writing the third album which is about to be released this year. And I was in London looking for producer.
And long story short, I met Commissioner Gordon and moved to the US. We started this collaboration and decided to create a collective. So this is how it became the White Tiger Society.
Andy – And where did the name for the collective come from particularly?
Dajla – First of all, I’ve always felt really close to the Feline family all around the world. The lion with Ethiopians in Africa, the panthers, the tiger in Asia the feline family is sort of seen as a protector of humanity, which I like very much. And then in Asia there is a legend saying that the white Tiger is a mystical creature that appears when the Emperor of the land starts committing inhumane deeds.
